NO. 18 CSM RESPONDS WITH 69-20 VICTORY OVER SIERRA
SAN MATEO – Rahsaan Fontenette rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns as College of San Mateo rolled past visiting Sierra College, 69-20, in a non-conference football game Saturday afternoon. The freshman running back out of Oak Grove (San Jose) scored twice on nine yard runs and also on a 16-yard run.
CSM (1-1), which came into the game ranked No. 18 in the state, responded well after a season opening loss at Modesto. San Mateo is the only one of California's 69 Community College teams to score over 60 points so far this season. The Bulldogs remain at home to host No. 10 Fresno City College next Saturday (Sept. 17) at 2 p.m.
Sierra (0-2) scored first to take a 6-0 lead (with the PAT blocked by linebacker Daniel Lavulo). The Bulldogs responded with 48 unanswered points to control the game after three quarters. Quarterback Bobby Calmeyn connected with Sione Finefeuiaki on an 11-yard scoring pass with 2:51 left in the first quarter and the PAT kick by Jose Elizondo (his first of ten on the day) put the Bulldogs ahead for good at 7-6. Calmeyn now has six TD passes and 492 yards in two games
Ramaiah Marshall added 185 all-purpose yards to his Northern California lead (No. 2 in state) and also scored two first half touchdowns. The versatile sophomore out of San Lorenzo High has 429 total yards and has scored five times (co-leading the state in TDs). He paces the Bulldogs with 174 yards on 11 pass receptions and also has 42 yards rushing, 189 on kickoff returns, and 24 on punt returns. Fontenette totaled 152 yards, including 22 on kick returns.
San Mateo also utilized Ryan Brand at quarterback. He rushed for 58 yards and two scores and passed for 79 yards (completing 4 of 7).
CSM racked up more than 500 yards of offense (557) for a second straight week – but this time it came with a decisive victory off of fewer mistakes. The Bulldogs did not turn the ball over and picked off Sierra quarterbacks three times. Neither team lost a fumble.
Serra grad Kava Maka had eight tackles, an interception, and three pass break-ups. Josh Clarke had eight tackles and two pass breakups. Deon White and Dorrzel Hicks also intercepted passes for the Bulldogs.
