Keenan Smith and Rahsaan Fontenette combined for more than 200 yards rushing and Kaya Maka intercepted two passes as College of San Mateo opened Bay 6 League football play with a 52-14 win over visiting De Anza College Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs totaled 318 yards on the ground, with Smith gaining 107 yards and scoring twice. Fontenette rushed for 98 yards and caught three passes for 28 yards. CSM quarterback Ryan Brand was 13 of 19 for 168 yards and three scores. Joey Wood contributed 50 yards on nine carries and scored a TD.
San Mateo (3-3 overall), ranked No. 24 in the state coaches poll, shares the early Bay 6 lead with defending state champion No. 14 City College of San Francisco (4-2) and No. 3 Santa Rosa (6-0).
CCSF won its league opener at No. 8 Diablo Valley, 49-7, on Friday night, and Santa Rosa (6-0) beat Contra Costa, 34-0, on Saturday evening.
CSM visits Contra Costa (1-5) on Saturday (Oct, 22) at 1 p.m. before hosting CCSF on Oct. 29.
San Mateo started slow – trailing 7-0 after one quarter against De Anza – but finished with 38 unanswered points.
A 27-yard pass from Ryan Brand to San Mateo High grad Line Latu put the Bulldogs ahead for good at 21-14 with 2:12 remaining in the first half and the onslaught continued from there. Latu caught three passes for 61 yards.
Contributing to the second half shutout were linebacker Dorzel Hicks, with five solo and eight total tackles plus a forced fumble, and defensive back Kevin Powers, with nine total tackles. Tukua Ahoia and Jelani Brown each recovered De Anza fumbles. The Bulldogs had four takeaways and did not turnover the ball to the Dons.
