SAN MATEO – Versatile running back Ramiah Marshall racked up 168 yards in the first eight minutes Saturday as College of San Mateo finished a perfect 5-0 Bay 6 Conference football season with a 33-17 victory over visiting Diablo Valley College.
With a state playoff berth at top-seed Butte next Saturday already clinched, CSM coach Larry Owens rested many of his banged up starters for most of the game as the No. 10 state-ranked Bulldogs finished a 7-3 regular season campaign. That includes an earlier non-conference victory at NorCal Conference champion Butte (5-0, 8-2 overall), which will host the Northern California semifinal game in the NorCal Classic Bowl Saturday at noon in Oroville.
The Bulldogs scored quickly, on the first play of their second possession against Diablo Valley. Marshall ran 82 yards around right end down the sideline to pay dirt. The returning all-state back had started the game by returning the opening kickoff 43 yards. He finished his brief stint with 82 yards on kick returns, four yards on a pass reception, and the 82-yard run from scrimmage.
With previous starting quarterback Ryan Brand already out for the season with an injury, Owens used current starter Bobby Calmeyn for only the first two series. Then No. 3 QB freshman Chris Zografos took command, throwing a 39-yard TD pass to Sione Finefeuiaki on San Mateo's next possession for a 14-0 lead with 8:18 left in the initial period.
Zografos got the needed experience, completing 13 of 22 passes for 171 yards and three scores without being intercepted. CSM rushing leader Keenan Smith played only in the first half, finishing with 48 yards on 13 carries. He led the Bulldogs for the season with 627 yards and had a 5.4 average per carry.
Backup CSM running back Isiah Williams was the game's top rusher with 86 yards on 13 carries to finish with a season total of 246 yards and a 6.3 average per carry. Joey Wood added 58 yards on 11 carries for a season total of 235 yards and a 4.1 average. The Bulldogs totaled 288 yards on the ground. CSM had 463 yards of offense while holding the Vikings to 255.
Line Latu had six pass receptions for 98 yards, including a 24-yard TD from Zografos in the second quarter. He was CSM's yardage leader for the season with 606 on 32 catches, including seven TDs.
Marshall led the Bulldogs in season receptions with 35 (565 yards) and had six TD catches. He had 1,155 all-purpose running yards, an average of 144.4 per game played, and scored eight total touchdowns.
Michael Maunga led San Mateo tacklers against the Vikings with ten. Keone Keahi, Colt Doughty, and Tukua Ahoia each had six tackles. Daniel Lavulo had two sacks.
Doughty led CSM for the season with 68 total tackles, followed by Dorzel Hicks with 65. The Bulldogs intercepted 15 passes, led by Kava Maka (5) and Jordan Hendy (3). Daniel Lavulo and Kwami Jones each had five sacks, followed by Ahoia with 4.5.
