SEASON OVER FOR BAY 6 FOOTBALL CHAMPION CSM AFTER BUTTE REMATCH

SEASON OVER FOR BAY 6 FOOTBALL CHAMPION CSM AFTER BUTTE REMATCH

 

The Bay 6 League champion College of San Mateo football team finished the season with a 30-12 setback in their muddy rematch at NorCal League champion and top-seeded Butte College in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs in Oroville (Nov. 19). CSM had won their non-league meeting, also at Butte, 14-7.

 

Butte (9-2) has gone unbeaten since that setback and will now host American River (9-2) in the Northern California finals on Saturday.

 

For a second straight year the Bulldogs (7-4) were one of only four Northern California community college teams (out of 32) to advance to the state playoffs, playing in arguably the strongest conference with the toughest schedule. State No. 9 ranked CSM played all three of the other region state qualifiers early before sweeping through a perfect 5-0 Bay 6 campaign. Only Butte and 2015 at-large entrant San Mateo repeated as state qualifiers from last season – when Bay 6 champion San Francisco went onto win the state title. CSM effectively ended CCSF's state reign with a win over the Rams last month.  

 

In the NorCal Classic Bowl playoff contest in the rain, an early 14-0 first half deficit was too much from which to recover on the soggy field. CSM had threatened to score on the opening possession, driving to the Butte 11 before turning the ball over on downs.

 

San Mateo lost two of six fumbles and had four total turnovers, thwarting several drives. The Bulldogs defense, which had intercepted 15 passes this season, failed to get a turnover in the game.

 

CSM scored in the third quarter on a 35-yard pass play from Bobby Calmeyn to Ramiah Marshall to close to 14-6. The Bulldogs attempted a 2-point conversion on a fake kick attempt -- but the pass was intercepted by Butte's Ryan Leach and returned 98 yards to put the Roadrunners up 16-6.

 

Butte quickly increased the margin to 23-6 on a 75-yard pass play from Clayton Welch to Ravi Ram.

 

San Mateo stayed in contention at the start of the final period, marching 51 yards in ten plays to close to 23-12 on a 4-yard TD run by Sione Finefeuiaki. The Bulldogs then held Butte to a quick 3-and-out to get the ball back, after a punt, at midfield. CSM, however, could only get to the Butte 43 before giving the ball back on downs. The Roadrunners responded with a 57-yard drive, scoring on Martin Fleming's 35-yard run for the final 30-12 margin with 4:49 left on the clock. 

 

DOUGHTY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF GAME: CSM freshman linebacker Colt Doughty (6-1, 230) had 13 tackles and was honored as defensive player of the game. He finished the season leading the Bulldogs with 81 tackles. He also had three sacks, a pass interception, and a fumble recovery this year.

 

Keenan Smith rushed for 91 yards on 21 carries and led the Bulldogs for the season with 762 yards on 136 carries (78.7-yard average for nine games played).

MORE THAN 3,000 ALL-PURPOSE YARDS BY TOP 3 CSM BACKS: Returning all-state slotback Marshall finished the season with 1,209 all-purpose yards (134.3 average to rank No. 6 in the state). He also had a team-leading 37 pass receptions. For his CSM career, Marshall totaled 2,470 yards in 20 games played.

Freshman Rahsaan Fontenette had 106 total yards against Butte and also accounted for more than a thousand for the season at 1,053. Adding 878 for Smith, CSM's top three backs totaled 3,140 all-purpose yards this season. The Bulldogs approached 4,000 yards for the top four with an additional 758 by Finefeuiaki.

 

Calmeyn passed for 103 yards (9 of 21) against Butte. He finished his 8-game year at San Mateo with 1,227 yards (105 of 180) and 11 TDs. Freshman wide receiver Line Latu had 33 catches for a team-leading 615 yards and seven TDs.
