COAST NORTH LANDS CAÑADA & DEFENDING CHAMP CCSF IN MEN'S FINAL 8 AT LAS POSITAS MAR. 9-12
Mike Pickney had 23 points and Davis Kimble added 21 as Cañada College defeated visiting American River College, 86-71, Saturday night to claim Northern California's fourth berth in the California Community College Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament at Las Positas College (Livermore) March 9-12.
The two sophomore guards broke open the game over the final five minutes of the first half, scoring 15 Colts points to move from a 30-28 lead to a 45-36 mid-game advantage. They had a trio of three's during an 11-point run in that span. No. 5 north seed Cañada scored the next nine points after the break, starting with a 3-pointer by Kimble, for an 18-point lead -- and stayed in control the rest of the game. Kimble had six assists and Pickney had five. Each had three steals.
Richard Reed led American River (16-11) with 29 points, including three 3-pointers. The Beavers had eight baskets from beyond the arc.
STATE PAIRINGS;
Cañada (23-7), which finished second in the tough Coast North Conference behind defending state champion City College of San Francisco, will face Southern California top seed Fullerton (24-6), the Orange Empire Conference champion, in Thursday's quarterfinal opener at 1 p.m.
State top-ranked and No. 1 north seed CCSF (28-2) plays No. 14 south seed Antelope Valley (22-10) at 5 p.m. in the other bracket. San Francisco had a bit more trouble getting past No. 9 seed Butte, 62-60, in their regional final. Butte (20-10) was the Golden Valley Conference runner-up to north No. 2 seed Feather River (25-3) -- which advanced to the Elite Eight with a 101-95 win over state host Las Positas (22-8), the fourth place team in the Coast North.
Fullerton was the only top 4 seed from the south to advance. No. 5 San Diego CC (28-5), the Pacific Coast South champ, will be the south's No. 2 team and face Bay Valley champion Yuba (28-2) in Thursday's nightcap, at 7 p.m. No. 10 south East Los Angeles (23-6), The South Coast North champion, plays Feather River at 3 p.m. Darkhorse Antelope Valley was the third place team in the Western State East Conference.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The top seeds from both the NorCal and SoCal regional playoffs have found their way to the CCCAA Men's Basketball Championships at Las Positas College and will be joined in the Elite Eight by a pair of upset winners in the south and four other top regional seeds.
Fullerton (24-6) and City College of San Francisco (28-2) were their regional's respective top seeds in the south and the north and both advanced on Saturday night, although CCSF had to withstand a late rally from upstart Butte before winning, 62-60. Tenth-seeded East Los Angeles (23-6) and 14th-seeded Antelope Valley (22-10) didn't let their low seeds hold them back, going on the road for upsets on Saturday. East L.A. upset second-seeded El Camino-Compton, 83-80, while Antelope Valley edged Citrus (74-71.
--Thursday's schedule will have Fullerton-Cañada (23-7) at 1, followed by Feather River (25-3) vs. East Los Angeles at 3, San Francisco and Antelope Valley at 5 and San Diego City vs. Yuba (28-2) at 7.
