5CTCA announces Runners of the week after first full week of competition
September 3, 2024
SALINAS - The 5CTCA is proud to announce its NorCal and SoCal Runners of the Week after teams throughout the state completed their first full week of racing.
Up north in Eureka in Week #1, College of the Redwoods hosted its annual Beat the Heat with welcomed rain the night before to provide ideal race-day temperatures. Jared Hayes of Santa Rosa JC won his first college race for the Bear Cubs despite the course measuring nearly 8km in 26:51. Butte College freshman Jennifer Johnson also won her first collegiate race on the Arcata Marsh trails over 5 kilometers in 21:33.
Tour de Cuesta is traditionally one of the first races in the South and a new face on the men's side and a familiar one on the women's side took individual victories. 2023 All-American and recent 1500-meter state champion Dana Ibarra Canales of Saddleback zipped away from the field over the last mile to win by 45 seconds in 19:57. Allan Hancock has found a top individual in John Gutierrez, who won his first race for the Bulldogs over the challenging 4-mile course at Fairbanks XC Course in 21:55.
