5CTCA announces Runners of the Week for seventh weekend of 2024 campaign
SALINAS - The regional preview meets were held on Oct. 4 with SoCal converging on the campus of Chaffey College and the North heading to Toro Park in Salinas. Both meets saw outstanding individual performances as programs began their push toward championship season.
Running over the challenging layout at Chaffey, freshman Victoria Jamison gave previous ROTW recipients Dana Ibarra Canales of Saddleback and Itandehui Olea of Hancock all they could handle and placed third overall for College of the Canyons. She was the highest-placing freshman in 19:33.7, less than one second off a runner-up finish. Jamison helped COC to a sixth-place team finish and could be a force to be reckoned with during her two years.
Tommy White of Moorpark College placed second in 21:00.3 just eight seconds off the win for the Raiders. White was within the top five from mile one and made a strong push to the front just before the three miles. White has made steady progress in September and as a freshman is looking at a high finish in his first SoCal championship in November.
Butte College has an impressive freshman in Stephan Chapdelaine. Chapdelaine won the NorCal Preview Meet by nine seconds covering the Toro Park course in 20:33. He ran aggressively from the front and led the field over the entire four miles. His time was the 15th-fastest ever on the course and not far off the record of 20:09 set by Butte runner Oscar Uribe in 2005 at the Northern California Championship.
Host school's Roselyn Olivo placed second in 19:26 to pace her team to a runner-up finish. Olivo was the only runner in the field to cover the first half of the course with previous ROTW recipient Rhiannon Walker of Clovis. Olivo was regional runner-up as a freshman and may be a rare two-time runner-up in the meet's history
