October 8, 2024
SALINAS - Competing locally at the Cougar Challenge , a pair of Olympians pick up Runners of the Week honors for the weekend of Sept. 27-28 . Sophomore Ronaldo Way led San Diego Mesa College with his 25:02 8k performance. He was the second 3C2A finisher and guided Mesa to a fourth-place team finish in the four-year heavy event. Teammate Alexis Noble appears to be rounding into championship form with her 22:19 6km performance, one of the fastest 6km by a 3C2A athletes this fall. Noble, the defending state champion, will face off with all regional challengers Oct. 4 at the rescheduled Socal Preview Meet.
In the North, Vidal Luna is putting the first-year program Madera Community College on the map. Luna ran away from the field by 51 seconds at the Modesto JC Invitational in 20:13. His 25:03 8km two weeks ago got overlooked as it was his debut for the season. Luna gives Madera a legitimate contender for the Norcal individual title and will see how he fares on Friday at the Norcal Preview Meet at Toro Park in Salinas. Joselin Joya Camacho of DeAnza won her first college cross country meet as a Mountain Lion in Modesto. She bested teammate and week #1 ROTW Mackenzie MacDonald by six seconds in 19:40. A top 50 state performer last year, Camacho looks ready to move into the All-State honors.
